3rd Annual Princeton Road Trip
On Saturday, November 6th 2004, a group of Florence Township Soccer League players took a road trip to Princeton University to watch the women's soccer team take on University of Pennsylvania. Before the game, the team honored their "Tenacious Ten" seniors. It was a very exciting game. Princeton went into the game ranked 12th in the nation and won the game to finish their regular season at 15-2-0 overall, 7-0-0 in the Ivy League and extending its home winning streak to 14 straight.
Esmeralda Negron, who has had a big game every time Florence has been in attendance, scored three goals and added an assist to lead Princeton to a 4-1 win over Penn. Esmeralda's big night helped Princeton set the school record for wins in a season with 15, and became the first team in program history to have a perfect record in the league and the fourth in Ivy history to go 7-0-0. The first goal of the night gave her the school records for goals in a season, points in a season, points in a career and goals in a career.
Romy Trigg-Smith had the other goal for Princeton, her first career goal. Romy is a defender who has started every game the last two years and who came into the game having played every minute of every game this season. That streak came to an end as Tiger coach Julie Shackford substituted many players into the game.
Some of the Florence players attending the game had the opportunity to work as ball girls. They did a great job of keeping the game moving. Maybe one day they will have the opportunity to be on the other side of the lines for a college game.
It's hard to beat the view you get watch a game at Lourie-Love Field and the Tigers put on a great show. They demonstrated their skills starting with their pre-game warm-ups and carried it right into the game. The Florence players watched as the Tigers showed what it takes to be a great team with precision offensive and defensive play.
After the game, our players were allowed on the field to meet the coaches & players. They had time to chat with quite a few of them and collected a number of autographs. It was a big night for the Princeton team and they still made the time to talk to our players. Our sincere thanks to the Princeton players and staff for their time and patience. The children had a wonderful time and are sure to return for future games.
Go Tigers, we'll be cheering you on during the tournament!!!
